Living intuitively is probably one of the hardest things to do, especially in today's society. I mean, we are bombarded by social media, we are expected to reply instantly to emails, phone calls, text messages. We hardly live in the moment because we are so concerned about how many likes we got on Instagram, or "checking-in" on Facebook where we are. We are the generation of "go-go-go". We don't even listen to our bodies anymore. We just do what we are told is right. We follow what we're told is "healthy". We do the latest fitness trends on Instagram. We have lost touch with ourselves. Or at least I did, so I decided to work on changing it.
You actually have to put in effort to live intuitively. That means you have to sometimes stop for a moment and think about how you truly feel and what you really want to do. For me, I try to make my life more intuitive through eating, exercising, and socializing. Let me explain.
1. Intuitive Eating
Eating intuitively means eating the foods you want, when you're hungry, and stopping when you're satisfied. For a very long time, I would only eat at certain times of the day because I thought eating too soon from when I last ate would make me fat (makes total sense, right? No). I also never ate passed 6pm because I thought it was "bad" and would ruin all my progress. Well, fun fact for you all: you can eat whenever, wherever and however you want because you are in charge of your body. If you're not hungry, you don't have to eat. If you ate 15 minutes ago, and your stomach is growling, then feed it. Also, if you don't like spinach (or any kind of food) - don't eat it (or find a way to hide it in a smoothie or something). My point is, you don't HAVE to eat something because it's "healthy" right now. There's millions of foods to eat, and many ways to eat - find what works for you. It's not the same for everyone. Also, stop with the diet trends, fads, and gimmicks. Your body is an incredible mechanism. It will balance itself out. Learn to trust your intuition and listen to your body and that is when you will feel the best and be the happiest. Your body will reward you for it.
2. Working Out Intuitively
This concept was introduced by a trainer/friend at the gym. One day she said she "works out intuitively." She listens to her body. Some days she craves lifting weights, while other days she'd rather do cardio, or go for runs. Some days she goes to the gym and is only there for half an hour because she's simply not feeling it. While other days she's there for hours - in the zone. I LOVE THIS CONCEPT. This is how working out should be. It should be about how you feel and what makes you FEEL GOOD. Some days I feel like being a POP Pilates princess, while other days I'm a lifter in the gym.
Know why else I love this? Because it takes guilt away from having to follow a strict plan. Because strict plans can cause people to freak out just because they missed a day. And probably for good reason - because they didn't FEEL like doing it. Ah, so much relief. Like how comforting is it to know that you can wake up tomorrow and choose what you feel like doing? When you listen to your instincts, to how your body wants to move, then it's likely your energy levels will go up and you'll be more motivated to do it - and KILL IT! Again, that's when the results happen.
3. Intuitive Socializing
I'm an introvert. Basically, I love people, I love socializing, but I can only do so much for so long, and then I need time for myself to recharge. That may make sense to you because you're an introvert yourself, or it might be a totally bizarre concept for you. Introversion/extroversion fascinates me. Look into it ;) Anyways! Because I'm an introvert, I only have so much social energy to use for so long, so I want to use it efficiently. I want to use it by being with people who uplift me, motivate me, inspire me, and simply make me feel good. If I don't get that vibe from you, then it's not worth it. That may come across kind of rude, but that's how I feel. For so long I used to go out and "party" with people who have no value in my life. I thought I had to do it because it was "cool" and that's what young adults do. But I was wrong. I don't have to do anything I don't want to do. If it doesn't feel right and has no worth to you, then don't invest your time in it. Listen to your instincts. Ask yourself if the people you're surrounded by are positive influences in your life. Do they share similar values to you? Do they make you a better person? Intuitive socializing will benefit your life because you no longer have to "waste" energy, and instead can put that energy towards positivity and the things that make YOU and better YOU!
Are you really in-tune with your true self, or are you just doing what you think you're supposed to be doing?
