A very highly requested topic that people want me to talk about is weight gain. This is a trending topic because many of you are stuck in the diet mentality, have been restricting for years, or have an eating disorder and know that it's time to recover your health and happiness.
If you are reading this post, then you are already on the right track - so congrats!
1. Acknowledge and accept that you need to gain weight for health
This is so so so important because this is your GOAL - to gain weight. This is an ongoing step throughout your journey because you will have times when you want to give up. There will be times when it becomes hard, but I promise if you look back at your goal and stay TRUE to it, you will get to a healthier and happier place. So accept it, make it a goal, write it down and FOCUS on it.
2. Educate yourself on basic nutrition
A HUGE indicator in my recovery was educating myself on basic nutrition. I'm talking about what calories AKA ENERGY do for your body. What carbs, protein, and fats do so your body functions adequately. Just keep it basic. You don't want obsession, but you want to know WHY food is important and why cutting out food and food groups is NOT HEALTHY. This will help you understand food and your body better. This will also help you remove the "good and bad" food ideas you have learned over the years of dieting and restricting.
3. Putting it into action - eating more.
This may be the hardest of them all because when you are stuck in the diet mentality, you don't want to eat more, you are taught to eat LESS, so it seems weird and unnatural to you. But my best advice is to start SLOW. Take baby steps. Here are things that helped me as I was recovering from my eating disorder:
Bloating and new sensations may occur and that's NORMAL. Your body is adjusting.
4. Dealing with weight gain.
It's like weight gain is the enemy. We don't see any programs on "How To Gain Weight" and we sure as hell aren't praised for gaining weight, so the entire concept may seem weird and awkward for you. That's OKAY! This is when you remember your goal - to gain weight for your HEALTH and HAPPINESS.
Each day is not going to be perfect. You are going to have bad body image days and you are going to have positive body image days. It's all about gaining strength through the struggle. Weight gain is WORTH it. If you are tired, sick, irritable, and just plain sad all the time. Then know that this extra HEALTHY weight will help you THRIVE in your life.
