Health is not a body type. Health is not a meal plan. Health is not a diet. Health is not a detox. Health is not working out every day. Health is not about having muscles. Health is not about having abs, or quads. Health is not about losing weight.
We THINK this is health because companies are really good at convincing us that it is. It's a marketing scheme. They know who to tailor towards and who are easily convinced - usually young women, vulnerable to criticizing their bodies and thinking they need to fix it.
Are you associating "health" with the latest workout fad and meal plan? Do you think that "healthy" people are people who go to the gym every day and eat kale? Do you think "health" is looking a certain way?
Sure many things can be healthy: a balanced diet, working out. There is 100% a misconception that giving into all these fads, to giving into diet culture means you are now or will be "healthy." Because that's what they are labeling you will be - "healthy." They use that term to trick you into their program because they think that you will believe it to be true AND because they KNOW you want to be... healthy.
But you know what you have the high tendency to become? Obsessed.
Obsessed with your body. With food. With hating your body. With over-analyzing your body. Obsessed with the scale. You will start depriving yourself of foods you love. You'll start feeling guilty for eating, for not working out. That my friends, is NOT health.
They also have the tendency to make you lose touch with your body. You're no longer eating or working out intuitively - you are forcing yourself to follow these "rules", which to me, takes us away from human nature. We are meant to be intuitive. We are meant to listen to our bodies. If something doesn't feel right, then we try to fix it. If we feel like we want to eat X food - then we eat it. We eat when we're hungry and we stop when we're full. THAT is how we should be living.
So what is "healthy" since we have screwed up that definition for years?
Health - soundness of body or mind; freedom from disease or ailment
And what is "balance" since we aren't really living a balanced life anymore?
Balance - mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.
So ultimately, I know that I am aiming to achieve health - being free of disease, mind and body. And balance - having mental steadiness and stability, feeling calm and having habits without judgement or obsession.
You can live a healthy and balanced life without becoming obsessed. To those who NEVER took part in a diet fad or workout plan - then you are probably feeling balanced and healthy because you are in tune with your body. But for those who have become so deep into following rules and guidelines, who have become obsessed with eating, working out and looking a certain way, is this really what you want? Do you really want to live this way the rest of your life?
Life is a balancing act. I live everyday to find more peace and balance in my life and I really hope you do too.
