You want me to ADD more food into my diet? To the average person, that might be exciting. HECK YES, MORE FOOD. But for those who have restricted for a very long time, it's actually quite scary. Breaking the habit of dieting and restriction is NOT easy.
Reverse dieting is basically the opposite of dieting. Instead of cutting calories/food/food groups, you are now adding calories BACK into your diet. Why would people do this? Well, it's usually done after a long period of restricting calories and extreme dieting. That's why you see many bikini competitors do this after their show. Think about it - they cut down to get "stage lean" but that is not sustainable, so now they are adding food back in at a steady rate to get back up to maintenance to be healthy, happy, and just plain satisfied again.
I used reverse dieting to bounce back from my eating disorder. After YEARS of extreme dieting and restriction, my body wasn't happy. I was tired, sick, irritable and just plain not okay. I knew I needed to eat more food. So, I when I finally made the HARD decision to recover, I reverse dieted by adding more calories/food back into my diet.
Most people do this by TRACKING their calories/macros to ensure they are increasing at a steady rate. But since I didn't want to create another bad habit, I reverse dieted INTUITIVELY. Yes, I listened to my body and just ate my to fix my metabolism.
Reverse dieting isn't about going crazy and eating all the food. It's a slow and steady process. You can do this by increasing portions of what you are already eating and by adding an extra 1-2 snacks throughout the day. And don't be afraid to have a "cheat meal" (or whatever you want to call it) when you feel like it. You'll be amazed by how quick your body responds to food.
